Arame Salon and Spa partner’s up with Stony Brook University Medical Center

Arame Salon and Spa is proud to be supporting “Cut for a Cure” for a third year running. We will be opening our doors on Sunday, October 23rd from 10 am thru 1pm. Proceeds from the day’s efforts will be donated to the cause. We will be offering snacks and refreshments for all of our guests and encourage you to stop by and show your support. In addition, we will be selling raffles tickets throughout the month to increase our donation efforts (1 raffle for $5 and 5 for $20)

Excellent prizes will be awarded! Proceeds go to benefit cancer patients treated at Stony Brook University Medical Center.

We will also offering Aveda’s “Pink Ribbon” Hand Relief. With each item sold AVEDA will donate $4 to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation! You can also visit www.aveda.com to obtain additional information.

Arame Salon & Spa was recently featured in the July 1, 2011 edition of Long Island Business News as part of an interview with Maureen Calamia, owner of the Saint James green/feng shui consulting firm Luminous Spaces.

How Green is my Feng Shui?

Design pros see connections between concepts

Sometimes it’s difficult to refrain from New Age jargon.

Take the Arame Salon & Spa in Port Jefferson, where – ready? – the chi, or energy, flows and the carbon footprint is light. In other, more staid terms, a couple of years ago owners Phyllis and Ron Schlumpf were looking to make changes that were both friendly to the environment and their staff and customers. The spa was transformed and now boasts a seamless combination of feng shui principles and green building ideas.

“Green is about being earth-friendly, and feng shui is about what’s human friendly – it’s about how we feel both consciously and subconsciously,” said Maureen Calamia, owner of the Saint James green/feng shui consulting firm Luminous Spaces, which guided Arame’s renovation. An ancient Chinese art and science developed to allow humans to live in harmony with the earth, feng shui is complimentary to green design, Calamia said.

The eco-friendly features of the Arame renovation included sustainable bamboo wall coverings, cork flooring and non-toxic paint. These elements promote a healthy indoor air quality while the cork flooring is a feng shui connection since it’s easy on the staff who are on their feet all day.

Previously, the receptionist’s desk was front and center, right where customers walked in, and behind the desk loomed a cavernous room with salon chairs. “We moved the receptionist’s desk to the side,” Calamia said. “There is an uncomfortableness when a customer is confronted by a receptionist when he first walks in and can’t scan the space and take it all in, and the receptionist was constantly assaulted by this flow coming at her.”

A bamboo wall covering, with the company logo, was placed near the front, to separate the back of the salon. Customers may not look their best when their hair is wet or if they’re sporting rollers and generally would rather not be on display, Calamia said.

Arame raises $1250 during Earthmonth, 2011

Thanks to the generosity of our guests we had our best Earthmonth fundraising efforts to date, raising $1250! We raffled off three great prizes to raise a portion of the monies. Proceeds go to Clean Ocean Action, www.cleanoceanaction.org, who’s mission states ” Our goal is to improve the degraded water quality of the marine waters off the New Jersey/New York Coast”. These efforts are part of Aveda’s global efforts for clean waters (www.aveda.com). For the third year in a row, we also participated in Earthstock at Stony Brook University, helping to bring awareness to the issues our environment is challenged with and ways we can help.

We are grateful for all the support our staff and guests provided during this campaign and look forward to continued success. Thanks again to all!
